FEMA Inspection Preparation Checklist

Documents to have ready

• Photo ID (driver’s license or other government ID in your name)
• Proof of ownership (deed, tax bill, mortgage statement)
• Proof of occupancy (utility bill, lease if renter, insurance declarations)
• Insurance policy info / claim status (file insurance first when covered)
• FEMA application number / registration info if you have it

Damage & access

• Photos/videos of damage taken before cleanup/repairs (and any already-repaired areas)
• Clear path to all damaged rooms and exterior areas
• List of areas you want the inspector to see (attic, crawlspace, outbuildings if relevant)
• Notes on pre-existing vs disaster-worsened damage (be ready to describe accurately)
• Directions / landmarks if your home is hard to find (color, house type, mile markers)

Safety & household

• Pets secured or contained
• Unsafe areas marked; inspector can assess exterior if interior is unsafe
• You will be present, or a representative was designated in writing on the official DisasterAssistance / FEMA website (20–45 minutes typical)
• Phone charged — answer unknown numbers around appointment time
• Plan to verify official FEMA photo ID on arrival (look at the badge; do not photograph it — call the helpline if unsure)
